  2. Select ‘Clean up By.’
  3. Choose an option to arrange them according to that (Name, Date Modified, kind, size, etc.).

You can modify folders and apps spacing in Show view option by right clicking on blank space of your desktop or Choose snap to grid to automatically have files snap to a grid.

But, still, now the item is not deleted permanently. To delete it permanently you need to empty the Trash.

To empty the trash:

  1. Click on ‘Trash’ icon to open it.
  2. Click ‘Empty’ on the top-right corner to empty the trash or delete the items permanently. Confirm if asked.

You can hide the entire desktop icon by using a Terminal command. Follow the steps to perform this:

  1. Launch ‘Terminal’ app.
  2. Type or copy & paste “defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop -bool false”.
  3. Press ‘Enter’.
  4. Enter second command “killall Finder.”
  5. Hit ‘Enter’ key.

To bring all your icons back: change the second step with “defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop true”.
